IOTA INTERACTIVE - it's all in the details

Blackout

On January 18, 2012 Iota Interactive blacked out it's website in Protest of the SOPA/PIPA bills that will be voted on in the coming weeks. Read more at www.sopastrike.com.

Why

While these bills have good intentions, they are extremely dangerous to US based companies that operate community driven websites which in turn, indirectly and often directly affect our economy and public opinion. The bills are vaguely written and could allow (with the right judge) the large industries in the US to legally censor the internet, shutting down countless websites.

This Metafilter article is an example of why these bills are a concern. Wikipedia is also taking a stand among other corporations such as Google, Mozilla, Wordpress and many others. Here is an appropriate analysis by techdirt.com. Learn more, and if you have the time, please read the proposed bills for SOPA and PIPA (pdf) and please contact your senator to voice your opinion on the future of the internet.

Result

We received notice that the bills received such an overwhelming response and it's such shakey ground that politicians are unlikely to want to touch this subject for a while fearing re-election issues. To keep up with future similar issues, register with fightforthefuture.org for further updates.
